Dental Implant Pre-Op Instructions - Houston, TX

Answers to Your Questions About Surgery at NewME Dental Implants of Houston

What Do I Need to Know Before Dental Implant Surgery?

Before we perform any kind of oral surgery at NewME Dental Implants of Houston, we want you to feel confident and relaxed. We’ve found that the best way to make that happen is to help you prepare, both mentally and physically.

You can be assured that Dr. Tareq Beck has the knowledge and experience to safely perform the procedure and will follow a precise plan. We want you to know the specifics of what will happen prior to surgery. We will review Dr. Beck’s plan and answer all your questions so you can have a pleasant experience at our modern, fully equipped surgical facility.

Some Things We Recommend

Dr. Beck and our staff will communicate with you well in advance, and on the day that you arrive for surgery. You will be asked to pause certain medications if you require anesthesia. Also, Dr. Beck recommends that most of his patients take specific over-the-counter vitamins and supplements to ensure successful surgery and promote healing afterward. Our Pre-Op Recommendations Include:
  • Vitamin D: 5000 IU
  • Vitamin C: 1000 MG
  • Zinc: 50 MG

How Should I Prepare for Dental Implant Surgery and Sedation at NewME Dental Implants of Houston?

To ensure your safety during surgery, Dr. Beck will need to know:

  • Prescription Medications you take
  • Vitamins or supplements you take
  • Any Drugs you take recreationally
  • If you use an inhaler for asthma

Certain drugs will be allowed on the day of your surgery, but others may need to be paused for a period beforehand.

If you feel sick and have a fever, head or chest cold, stomach flu, or other illness, we may determine that it is necessary to reschedule your appointment.

Refrain from smoking at least 48 hours before your appointment. Ideally, it will be most beneficial for your health and healing to minimize or stop smoking as soon as you can before your surgery. Tobacco and nicotine can burn oral tissues and restrict blood and oxygen flow. Healing slows, and the risk of infection significantly increases.

We ask that you drink no alcohol beginning 24 hours before your procedure. Alcohol and anesthesia can interact in ways that increase risk before, during and after surgery. Alcohol can make your body’s reaction to anesthesia more unpredictable.

No food or water for 8 hours before your surgical appointment. If you are scheduled for surgery in the morning, do not eat or drink after midnight. If your surgery is in the afternoon, you can eat lightly and drink clear liquid early in the morning (a piece of toast and a small cup of water, black coffee or tea).

We want you to be relaxed and comfortable, so arrive wearing loose-fitting, comfortable clothing. Shoes should have no heels, or low heels. We will start an IV prior to surgery, so we will need access to your arm. Please do not wear makeup, nail polish, perfume, or jewelry.

You will need a friend or relative to drive you to and from your appointment and to stay in the waiting room at NewME Dental Implants in Houston (or wait outside the car). You cannot make important decisions, drive or operate any machinery for the rest of the day.

Do not exercise or participate in strenuous physical activity for 24 hours after surgery.

What is the Timeline for the All-On-X Procedure at NewME Dental Implants of Houston?

This is an approximate timeline. Due to your bone anatomy, healing time and schedule, this may change.

Dr. Beck will extract teeth and perform bone grafts. He then places the implants, followed by recovery from anesthesia. (may take up to 3 hours).

Then we perform scans and Dr. Beck designs your temporary teeth for delivery the next day. (may take up to 3 hours).

When you come to our office the next morning, Dr. Beck will place your temporary prosthesis (teeth). You should be able to smile and eat normally while healing takes place.

We will follow up via phone call a month after surgery to make sure you are healing normally. We will review oral hygiene procedures and instruct you on how to begin using a Water Pik for cleaning.

*(If you prefer, an in-office exam can be scheduled)

You no longer need to avoid citrus or acidic foods, hot beverages, or carbonated drinks.

You can stop using StellaLife mouthwash. You can now use any mouthwash that does not contain alcohol.

Toothpastes Dr. Beck recommends are:

  • Parodontax Gum + Enamel Repair
  • Crest Pro-Health Advanced Gum Protection

Approximately three months after surgery, you will return to NewME Dental Implants of Houston for digital impressions and scans of your now-healed mouth and jaw.

The NewME team will utilize the two data sets to begin the design process for your new,

permanent “forever teeth.” A few design try-ins may be needed at this time. You will return for final delivery another day.
